Simone Kappeler – America 1981

In 1981, Simone Kappeler traveled through an America much different to what the States are today. This book now presents a selection of her images on this road trip. They reflect a direct and unrestrained manner, they tell of immediate sensual experience and the longing for freedom and independence. "I wouldn’t call it nostalgia, this affection for the uneventful past. It’s not about pining for traditional values or the phony simplicity of limited options. On the contrary, in those less demanding times, things open up. History loosens its grip. Imagination roams. Isn’t that a kind of freedom? Look at Kappeler’s spirited pictures and decide." One of the 25 Most Beautiful German Books

The “25 Most Beautiful German Books of 2020” have been chosen and we are thrilled that Scheidegger & Spiess is represented with Jürg Düblin’s historical study In Stalins Reich. Die Moskauer Jahre des Architekten und Städteplaners Hans Schmidt 1930–1937, designed by Beat Keusch and Anna Klokow / BKVK, Basel. The Jury’s verdict: “Does this book feel surprisingly recent because of the timeless validity of classical modernism? Or is it an accomplishment of skillful design – exceeding its pure function, like a visual language – to communicate meaning through form?”
